IQNM - How To Become a Nurse
Australian Outcomes Based Assessment (OBA) Preparatory Program
For Internationally Qualified Nurses
In March 2020, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) replaced the previous bridging program pathway with an Outcomes Based Assessment (OBA) for Internationally Qualified Nurses and Midwives (IQNMs). Under the OBA assessment, the eligible international nurses will have to undertake two examinations called NCLEX-RN and OSCE (Objective structured clinical examination) to attain the nursing registration in Australia.
Step by Step process
Outcomes Based Assessment
01 - Self Check
All International Qualified Nurses (IQNMs) need to submit their qualifications information at the Self-check on the AHPRA website. There is no fee to use the Self-check services. Based on the information that you have provided you will be allocated into one of three streams:
- Stream A (Register with conditions for supervised practice)
- Stream B – OBA
- Stream C – upgrade qualification through additional study
02 - Pay IQNM Assessment fee
A non-refundable assessment fee for assessment and orientation is AUD $640 and Orientation Part 1, must be completed by all in the following groups to proceed in the assessment process.
03 - Orientation Part 1 (Online)
This e-learning module provides the basic information about the Australian healthcare industry, role of nurses in the healthcare system etc. and takes approximately 60-90 minutes to complete
04 - Portfolio
In this stage, you must upload all your identity, qualification documents duly attested/certified as per AHPRA guidelines
Application Form, plus:
- officially certified documentation for all qualifications relevant to the candidate’s portfolio
- copy of course certificate awarded (e.g. degree)
- copy of the academic transcript
- proof of identity
05 - NCLEX RN/MCQ EXAM
National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) is an online examination conducted through Pearson VUE test centers in majority of countries.
The computer based multiple-choice question (MCQ) exam assesses the candidate’s professional knowledge.
It is a computer adaptive test, if you get a question correct the computer will give you a more difficult question, if you answer incorrectly the questions will get easier.
Test has up to 145 questions and you have 5 hours to complete (2 breaks included). Once you reach 95% competency the test will end (So it could finish at 95 questions or 120 or 145 depending on how you go)
06 - OSCE (Objective Structed Clinical Examination)
OSCE is a practical exam where candidates demonstrate their knowledge, skills and competencies of a graduate-level nurse or midwife and is conducted by Adelaide Health simulation Centre.
A clinical exam to assess the candidate’s knowledge, skills and competence at the graduate-level nurse or midwife from an Australian NMBA-approved program of study.
The RN OSCE exam consists of 10 stations (or clinical scenarios) that have been developed to test candidates against the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice. The OSCE is set at the entry to practice level that is expected of a Registered Nurse in Australia.
